Period Pain

Period Pain

Period pain affects over half of women and can be a regular annoyance, interrupting daily routines. Cramps occur when the muscle wall of the womb contracts and compresses the blood vessels in the womb. This reduces oxygen supply, causing the release of prostaglandins which trigger the pain.

Symptoms

  • Cramping in the stomach that spreads to the back and thighs, starting around the time the period is due

How can I manage period pain?

Some women find heat from a hot water bottle or a bath can relieve the symptoms. Gentle exercise such as yoga or swimming can help and wear loose clothing that does not restrict the lower abdominal area; painkillers are also effective to relieve symptoms.
